2023 Ice Gymkhana Recap

The annual RMC BMW CCA annual Ice Gymkhana event in Georgetown has become a staple for many in the club to exercise their winter driving acumen, and a record number of participants were able to attend the 2023 event.

With the cancellation of the ’22 event due to inadequate ice thickness, the welcome news of a solid 19 inch ice depth weeks before the weekend led to much excitement. Friday opened with a skid steer and snowplow on the lake, clearing an entry path from all the wind blown snow across the lake. Conditions had loads of packed snow, and occasional polished ice, but changed drastically into Saturday as much of the snowpack melted away leaving an unimaginably slippery surface. Both days enjoyed sunshine and minimal wind, a rare instance at the lake.

Friday and Saturday began at the lake with local restaurant The Alpine preparing breakfast burritos, and a visual course instruction from the shoreline thanks to gracious volunteers Grant and Carol. The morning session saw participants taking part in practice runs through the course, and experimenting with turning on and off the various assists their car had to track down the fastest way around.

Each afternoon began timed runs. As drivers found out the changing conditions on the lake meant places that had grip in the morning suddenly were void of any traction, they had to quickly adapt to find any semblance of speed. Driving quickly on the ice, speed is found in smoothness, and a trained eye to find grip not always on the racing line. Sometimes an aerial view of the track can help, not sure Alex was able to see the fastest line from that high up!

With timing complete, everyone headed over to The Alpine to enjoy a late lunch, and wait in anticipation at the announcement of the fastest times of the day. Times will be posted along with class winners. This spectacular event couldn’t happen without our volunteers – Thank you to Grant, Carol, Fred, Ted, Caleb, Brittany and Tim!!

We look forward to seeing new and familiar faces alike in 2024!
